New publication: seaweed extract to fight skin-ageing bacteria

The bacteria living on our skin may be quietly speeding up how it ages. A new peer-reviewed study in Marine Drugs MDPI, from our collaboration with Givaudan Active Beauty, puts numbers on it. Skin microbes release porphyrins that dull the complexion and deepen wrinkles, a process Givaudan names Porphyr’ageing™.

Algaia -JRS Group supplied and characterised the active that counters it: an upcycled 𝘓𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢 𝘩𝘺𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘢 extract rich in laminaran and mannitol. From bacterial cultures to a double-blind clinical trial, it lowered coproporphyrin III by 43% in vitro and facial porphyrins by 12.9% in vivo, and raised collagen I by 30% in skin explants.
